Wells, New York, United States 12190
1800's renovated Farmhouse with stunning views overlooking Lake Algonquin and Dunham Mountain.
Wells is a great area to find some peace and quiet, and this is the perfect home for those who are particular. Very clean and well maintained with lots of extras (3 bathrooms, binoculars, bikes, snowshoes, kayaks, tablecloths, that kind of thing). Rugged Adirondack enjoyment found outside, modern comforts found inside. Favorite activities include the easy 3.5 mile walk or bike around the lake, kayaking on peaceful and picturesque Lake Algonguin, skiing, snowshoeing and hiking to local waterfalls and peaks with great views. Frequent walks to the local ice cream shop are on the top of the list too.
The kitchen is part of an open floor plan, and is our favorite room! Beautiful lake views, fireplace and dining table, so the cook can converse with everyone. Double farmhouse sink, 5 burner gas stove, dishwasher, expansive wood counter space with breakfast bar. Very nice pots, pans, dishes, glassware, spices and other amenities provided. There is a seperate living area with sofa and 40" flat screen for watching Netflix movies. We have no cable TV here, we come here to get away from the news!
Upstairs master bedroom has cathedral ceilings, queen bed, private bath with soaking tub and great lake views. Two guest bedrooms have one double bed each and use of 1/2 bath in upstairs hallway, another full bath is downstairs.
We go out of our way to supply amenities that will make our guests stay a little easier, such as very nice towels and linens, binoculars, table cloths, iron and board, kayaks, paddle board, snowshoes, bikes, paper towels, tin foil, plastic wrap, napkins, sugar, spices, condiments - lots of little things you would find at home but may not think of bringing while traveling. We also share detailed directions on how to get to some amazing local spots, fun waterfalls and places that you might not find otherwise - some took us years to find!
The yard out front is where we spend our time, soaking in the sun and the view and BBQ'ing up dinner. There is a local road between our house and the lake, but we are above it and it is somewhat obscured. We have Adirondack chairs for lounging and enjoying the view, a fire pit and large Weber gas grill.
SPRING, SUMMER and FALL
During the warmer seasons our favorite activities include the 3 mile walk or bike around the lake, hikes to nearby waterfalls, swimming, paddle boarding and kayaking out front (you drag the kayaks across the road, launch them there). Public fishing is dock out front. Swimming is easy access, but It is a bit rocky, bring water shoes, or public sand beach is one mile away. 2 bikes, 2 kayaks, one stand up paddle board provided.
FALL FOLIAGE is AMAZING from the farmhouse! We have unobstructed views of the color filled mountains, doubled by the reflection of these mountains on the lake, really is a sight to see!
Winter is magical here! Cozy and warm inside, great sporting opportunities right out your front door. Snowshoe or cross country ski across the lake or on one of the many trails through the snow covered woods. Lapland Lake is a world class cross country resort with reindeer and authentic Finnish food. Downhill ski at family friendly Oak Mt. just a 15 minute drive (ask about the $50 discount they offer to our guests!), or much larger Gore which is 35 minutes away. Ice fishing, snowmobiling, and of course winter hiking to our local waterfalls are other favorite activities.
4 sets of snowshoes provided!
Speculator (next town over) rents snowmobiles, you can sled from here to Canada on wide expanse of groomed trails - this is amazing snowmobile country. Guided tours available for those trying it for the first time. Give it a shot - experiencing the Adirondack woods in winter, gliding over lakes, stopping in at different Pubs for a pint and a stew can be great fun. Highly recommended.
MORE ABOUT THE FARMHOUSE
This is one of the oldest homes in town - was a working farm for 100+ years. Fully renovated 2010. Sits on elevated 3/4 acre overlooking Lake Algonquin. Truly gorgeous view.
Porch - there is a large porch on the backside of house. Can read out there or store your skiis and toys. There is a sitting area to remove and store shoes so if you would like to be shoe free in house, as we are, it is convenient.
What's to LOVE about this house and area? Everything mentioned above.
What might you NOT love? Taking home your RECYCLES - because the town does not pick them up. So - the rule here is similar to camping - if you bring it in, you must agree to take it out! Leaving a small amount of recycles (less than one bag full) is fine, but they must be cleaned, dry, seperated (see? a hassle, I know) and will be taken to the transfer station and seperated by hand by our fabulous housekeeper.
No smoking, no pets (no exceptions, sorry!) and no candles please, this is an allergy sensitive home.
Watercraft is available for use May-Oct.

Overall we were very impressed with our visit. House was very clean, organized, everything was clearly marked. I've stayed in a lot of other rentals on Homeaway and VRBO and this was definitely the cleanest and most comfortable of the ones I've visited. We love the Adirondacks, and the Wells/Northville/Speculator area does not disappoint. Plenty of hiking, fishing, waterfalls, swimming and many other things to see in the area. Only draw backs were the hydroelectric plant being so close, and the road that runs between the house and the lake. But they were easy to overlook between the view of the lake and the condition of the house. We highly recommend this rental!
The “Farmhouse” property was wonderfully honey and absolutely “made” our trip to the Adirondacks. Between the extremely cozy couch in front of the fire stove to warm yourself to the spacious and comforting rooms it was hard to pick out a room we enjoyed the most. The only bad part was leaving (should have booked an extra day). Would definitely recommend for anyone wanted a more modern take on a cabin but with the old fashion feel and characters. Lake view was the tops.
The farmhouse met all of our expectations - views of the mountains and lake, access to kayak and an outdoor space that promotes time together. Each room is finished with calming colors and details, as well as books. The varied areas to sit and be social or relax make the cozy house feel vast. We cooked each night in the well planned kitchen and outdoor grill - the meals were made more special with locally farmed fruit and vegetables purchased at The Well. Before leaving we contemplated - what a nice week and when, not would, we return. Thank you for a great holiday.
We had a fabulous extended weekend at the "farmhouse," hiked four stunning waterfalls and bathed in nature's bounty that are the ADK's. The farmhouse was a perfect symphony of childhood memories of weeks at aunt/uncles warm, well warn and loved farmhouse in Connecticut, with all the upgrades and comforts one could ask for!! The views that await you ...to die for!!
Our stay at the Farmhouse was absolutely perfect. It is rustic with a touch of class. The large kitchen incredibly well equipped...and unlike many VRBO rentals this home doesn't feel at all as if it was "garage sale furnished". It is incredibly well maintained, and offers a view that is literally beyond words. The photos give you a sense, but are not nearly as beautiful as every sunset we witnessed. Addressing the review about being near the hydroelectric dam, we were quite pleasantly surprised when we arrived well after dark and thought we heard the sounds of a fast rushing stream or small waterfall, which only served to enhance the overall experience of being immersed in nature. The property offers a very private back yard, despite the little traveled road that sits beneath it...we heard perhaps ten cars throughout our four day stay and it wasn't an issue at all. Maura is a wonderfully responsive owner!! On our first morning we went to shower and discovered the master bath faucet was inoperable. One call to Maura and it was repaired as quickly as possible without fuss. This is an attentive owner whose responsive and speedy communication was greatly appreciated. The Farmhouse is spotless, restful, and a place that, without hesitation, I would recommend to others and hope to visit again next year!!
We recently stayed at the Farmhouse from June 30-July 3. Everything was as described and the communication from Maura was outstanding. The packet with all the information was extremely helpful and clear especially since there are some specific directions for garbage, recycling and the cleaning procedures. The house was comfy, the outdoor space was awesome and the access to the lake across the street was great for fishing or just relaxing. We loved the big kitchen for family meals and it was stocked with everything we needed. All of the windows allowed for a nice breeze for sleeping in the evenings. Thank you again to Maura for a wonderful stay!
PROS - Location - Lake Algonquin is beautiful, quiet picturesque and somewhat centrally located. Lovely home - The house is well-maintained the beds are comfortable and the bathrooms are clean and functional. CONS - -You are greeted by a pedantic manifesto of house rules and chores to be performed, a big turn off! -Beyond commonsense rules you get the impression that renting the property creates anxiety for the owner who then transmits it to you. It just goes on and on ad nauseam. Being aware of this in advance would've made the difference between renting or not. -Owner will not hesitate to charge you if the rules are not strictly followed. With over 20 years experience renting properties around the world this is the first time I got charged for not sorting recycle correctly! (ridiculous as that may sound) -Property is directly next door to a hydroelectric power plant that is quite an eyesore. The bottom line is this place is more work than it's worth... There are plenty of lovely rentals all around Lake Algonquin and nearby that you can enjoy without any of the hassle of this property.
Our town has recycle rules and garbage pick-up dates that need to be followed by us and our guests – all in an effort to preserve the pristine environment of the Adirondacks and to ensure a clean arrival for future guests. Following house instructions is a relatively easy and necessary part of staying here. We have done our best to be clear about expectations by stating them in our ad and the online lease, therefore there should be no surprises. Neglecting to put garbage out for pick-up, leaving large amounts of recycling, or mixing recycles with garbage is problematic, extremely unpleasant to have to remedy, and may incur added fees. We love sharing our home and have done all that we can to provide an exceptionally comfortable base for your Adirondack adventures. Guests have been great, most are more than considerate and many return time and again to this home or to one of our many others in the area. If you are not clear on something or need assistance while there, please let us know – our local house manager is available to ensure that your stay (and our house!) are both running smoothly.
Our family ranges from the get-up-and-go'ers to the sit-and-dreamers. So it's hard to find a place that all of us enjoy, but the Farmhouse more than filled the bill. Hiking, biking, kayaking, or just staring for long stretches at the exceptional view--we each found our happy place there. A wonderfully comfortable (and comforting) place!
The Farmhouse is a magical place. My sisters and I have stayed here twice now and hope to come back again. Everything at the house is perfect. We especially enjoy the sitting area off the kitchen with the comfy sofa and ottoman where we can sit and enjoy the warm fire and beautiful mountain and lake view. The house has every amenity. We just love it there. You will, too!
This house was absolutely lovely. So we'll maintained and cared for. There were 6 women on our trip and it was exactly what we were looking for. Cozy, quaint, quiet, and clean!! The lake was beautiful and entrance for kayaks was just across the street. I will definitely stay here again
Maura's property is amazing- from the location and condition of the farmhouse to the little details- like downward and up warding sliding blinds on all the windows and little soaps in the showers. The property looks out on a gorgeous view of the lake- there is a road in between the house and lake, but it's not loud. Do be aware that getting a watercraft (like the provided kayaks or paddle board!) is a little tricky- doable but tricky. The kitchen is amazingly appointed, the wifi speed is good for streaming, and the beds comfortable. Maura provides a binder with fun things to do- definitely get out on the water. Thanks Maura, for a great trip!
Our friends from Oklahoma City came with us - it was their first trip into the Adirondacks. The house is beautifully situated on quiet and lovely Lake Algonquin. Truly the view is perfect! We are partial to older homes and this one is well-appointed and obviously loved by the owners. We found it very "user-friendly." It was awesome having the kayaks there as opposed to having to rent boats. We did a lot of hiking and sight seeing in the area, but we found directions to various places were better secured from the "natives" rather than using the house notes. The "things to do" notebook was very helpful, however. We heartily recommend The Farmhouse for a stay in the southern Adirondacks!
We loved our time at the lakeside farmhouse. We are in love with the house - so many beautiful details, and so thoughtfully designed! We also appreciated all of the thoughtful details for quests - info on things to do, binoculars, kayaks, books, dvds, wifi, BBQ grill, etc. While we were there a storm came through and while the rest of the town lost electricity, the farmhouse's generator kicked in so we consistently had electricity. Both Maura and the house manager checked in with us when this happened which we appreciated. We spent our time there hiking, biking, kayaking, BBQing and relaxing by looking onto the lake- all of which we loved! One thing to note -the house is close to a small dam so it won't ever be completely quiet since the waterfall from the dam is there. That said, we only heard it when sitting outside and not when in the house. Thanks for a great, relaxing stay!
We had such an amazing time at this beautiful farmhouse. The house itself is just as gorgeous as you'd hope it would be from all the photos - the upstairs bedrooms are beautiful and there are shelves and shelves of books and board games for everyone to enjoy. We spent loads of time in the kayaks included with the property - you just carry them across the road and go into the water! We also built a few fires in the fire pit to roast marshmallows and hot dogs, and used the grill to make some amazing steaks and eat at the picnic table. The house has everything you need to live comfortably, eat outside, enjoy the scenery and just relax. Maura is also totally lovely and was really helpful. I would come back here in a heartbeat!
We had an absolutely fantastic time at the farmhouse at lake Algonquin! The house is extremely well equipped with kayaks, bikes, grill, games and all types of kitchen utensils, and is a perfect combination between charming antiqueness and modern-day comfort. We could clearly tell how much love and detailed care the owners put into this home. The lake and the surrounding areas were also perfect for swimming, kayaking, fishing and hiking. The only small surprise when we arrived was that there is a small road between the house and the lake, however we saw later that this was disclosed on the pictures provided, we just didn't realize beforehand. There is little traffic on the road and the area is peaceful at night, with only the waterfall from the nearby dam being audible. We definitely recommend staying at this charming house!
This house is something else!! Beautifully furnished, exceptionally well maintained and immaculately cleaned! The view of the lake was breathtaking. The kitchen had everything you could possibly need (although we never did get those farm fresh eggs that other reviews bragged about ; ) ) The only thing that was somewhat annoying was the policy on recycling. That is the town's issue though- not our landlords fault. We were so nervous to not mess it up that we took our recyclables back to NYC with us!! LOL Again- the house was lovely- the linens and the master bed were so comfy! Moira was great to work with- it snowed the day we left and she even offered a late check out to help us out! So nice and thoughtful. Will definitely return! Maybe even this summer :)
The details in the owners' thorough description are completely accurate. You will enjoy the artfully decorated and updated interior of this 1800's farmhouse with an unmatched view of Lake Algonquin and the ridge beyond. The property is scrupulously clean and well maintained. The owners have taken pains to supply guests with a comprehensive guide to the area including things to do, places to eat and sights to see. Supplied kayaks and bikes also make it easy for guests to enjoy the outdoors. Along with kayaking and hiking, we particularly enjoyed the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake, about 30-40 minutes north. We also loved the huge selection of books in the farmhouse. Some mornings it was tough to tear ourselves away! The owners have other properties in the area that might be of interest to those looking at the area. They all share the owners' thoughtful approach to vacation rentals and should be checked out. We enjoyed our stay and heartily recommend this rental.
Awesome family vacation~We loved out stay at the Farmhouse. Meticulously clean, the spacious well stocked kitchen was perfect for preparing meals which we ate outside as we watched the activity on the lake. The house is well stocked with books, games, and movies. Maura is very attentive and certainly detailed oriented. We found her directions and suggestions extremely helpful. Will definitely be back!
We stayed here right before 4th of July in 2010 and we loved every moment and were inspired to create owning our own lakeside home. The view of the lake is enchanting. The home is welcoming and well decorated. We loved the wide plank wood floors. There is a guy in the town who makes decorative items out of wood. We bought a 30" row boat to celebrate our 5th anniversary. If you have a small child the wooden stairs might be a concern. There is a small road to cross to get to the lake, but it is not heavily traveled. There was a wasp nest, but the owners quickly had it removed. It's fun to watch the red squirrels run around. We enjoyed biking, as well as swimming and kayaking. There is a small beach that's nice for kids at the end of the lake. We visited nearby Lake Pleasant two times and rented a boat there.
We did indeed really enjoy our stay. The farmhouse is impeccably decorated and modern while keeping its' farmhouse appeal! The setting was so private and yet we were able to watch the fishermen and take fun walks. There is a big firepit which we sat around while watching the starshow. Our only regret was not using the bikes. The kitchen was well stocked, the couches and bed were comfortable, and the view was just beautiful. We had great weather and went kayaking for fours hours around the lake - so peaceful! We also liked the binder that Maura put together of fun things to do and nearby restaurants. We had great dinners at the Melody Inn and the Inn at Speculator. So glad, Maura, you suggested we stay at your beautiful home. What a great way to spend our anniversary! We are definitely looking into renting one of Maura and Davids' properties for a Fall weekend.
This was a lovely house that has been lovingly restored and renovated to a high standard. It had all the mod cons and three beautiful bedrooms with quality linens and plenty of storage space. The owners really have thoughts of everything to make your stay comfortable. The views from the front rooms looking over the lake were absolutely stunning and we had a very restful stay. The area is quiet and it was great to have the bikes to ride around the town. It was a good base for exploring the surrounding mountains and the house would be a delight to stay in at any time of the year.
Everything about our weekend at the farmhouse was idyllic and perfect. The house is beautiful, exquisitely decorated, spotless, and perfectly functional. Everything was clearly labeled, in perfect working order, and was of the upmost quality. We relaxed all weekend long by reading by fire, cooking delicious meals, cozying up to watch movies, walking around the lake, and just enjoying the beautiful snowy winter view. Maura was prompt, clear, and courteous in all of our correspondence. It felt like we were visiting a gracious friend's home--nothing about it felt like a rental property. We would definitely like to come back again and experience different seasons in this charming and peaceful setting.
This beautiful old farmhouse was my absolute favorite vacation rental ever! It was quiet and serene, the perfect spot to relax and unwind for the week. The house has been beautifully restored, it felt like we were staying in a friend's home rather than a cold hotel room or outdated rental. I look forward to returning next summer!
We're from Virginia and perhaps the best part of our stay was the cool nights (in the 50's) and the chance to sleep with the windows open in August like it was October. Waking up in the master bedroom to a beautiful and peaceful view of the lake is priceless. The only surprise (which can be a plus or minus depending on your perspective) is that the house is not as "remote" as you might assume from the photos. There are close neighbors on both sides of the house and the lake itself has very little undeveloped waterfront property. If you love to hike, this is your place. Every mile or so in both directions offer signs with trails to remote ponds and smaller lakes. We took day trips to Saratoga (for the horse races- 1 hour), Cooperstown (1 hour 45 minutes) and Lake George (less than 1 hour). There is a very cool used bookstore nearby where we stocked up on reading material. Nice relaxing stay-
David and Maura's house is in a beautiful quiet spot. We arrived quite late at night and woke to a very snowy day, spending that day walking through the woods in the snow. The house is lovely - it's spacious, well maintained, warm, everything works and it is very clean. We felt very comfortable in the house and it was a pleasure to be there. We had great fun X country skiing at Lapland nearby, which is a fantastic venue. We also spent some time in the snow at both Gore and Oak Mountains - we were lucky with lots of snow and nice weather. We are sure that the house would be lovely to stay in during the summer and imagine that the area is would not be quite as busy as some other areas. David and Maura were very easy to deal with and we would heartily recommend their house to those who appreciate a lovely place to holiday.
My parents and I stayed at the Farmhouse for 6 days. We had a terrific time and regretted we did not rent the house longer. It was tough to say goodbye. While I live in the US, my parents are from France. They made the whole trip from Paris to stay there. Needless to say that the pressure was on for me to find "the perfect place" for their trip. The Farmhouse did not disappoint! It is magnificent, extremely well located, clean (my god!! we loved that), incredibly peaceful and comfortable. I am a serious cook, so can be pretty demanding when it comes to cooking spaces, but I thoroughly enjoyed cooking there. The views from the counter are beyond magical, especially in the evening as the sun sets. All amenities were beyond superb. The owners have thought of literally everything one might need: from a great DVD collection, free access to Netflix, excellent internet connection, to a well stocked kitchen, bikes, kayaks, a wonderful gas fireplace, numerous tips on the region, etc. We could not have been happier. I have rented many houses on HomeAway.com, and am a picky chooser, but must say this was one of my favorites, if not my favorite. It is an ideal place if you like to contemplate, read, hike/ walk, kayak, enjoy beautiful landscapes and it is easily accessible from Boston/ NYC.
First reaction after a traffic-filled Friday afternoon drive from New York City: wow! Very nice decor, generously-sized kitchen, and ample space in the house. Maura and David are extremely friendly and helpful (for example when the Netflix had a hiccup). Wells is a great place for a week-long stay with friends or family. My friends and I spent a lot of time swimming, kayaking, reading outside, cooking, and drinking. The town is very small, so the farmhouse would suit visitors who can make their own entertainment. (Saratoga Springs is a nice day trip, about 45mins-1hr drive away; Lake George is a similar distance but less classy!) A great place to chill out and enjoy the calming effects of the great American outdoors.
We loved this house from the pictures and seeing it in person did not disappoint. The upgrades inside the home are great. The beds and living room furniture were very comfortable. The house is located a stone's throw from the lake and the view is amazing. We had unusually hot weather when we stayed and with the house had AC or more ceiling fans. We have stayed in wells for years and have never had weather that hot so this was unusual and should not deter anyone from renting here. The owners of the home and quick to respond to questions and phone calls. We highly recommend renting this house.
This is the most wonderful house we ever rented. Everything was very clean. We stepped inside and felt home. The beds are wonderfully comfortable and every room was beautifuly furnished. Even the rooms without a photo in the description were very nice. Large Bathrooms, great towels and beddings. We were here with our 4 year old twins. We hiked every day after having many suggestions from Maura. Hope to come back soon Barbara, Germany
This farmhouse is a fantastic getaway in the beautiful Adirondacks. The house has been meticulously restored and the grounds are beautiful. The view of the mountain across the lake made me feel like I was looking at a Bob Ross (PBS) painting - it was absolutely stunning. We loved the expansive, clean kitchen and the house felt plenty large enough. We had a great time roasting Smores and grilling out every night. It was a perfect setting for our family of four. The only small drawback was the fact that the house sits on a road that circles the lake that was busier than we expected (not a busy road, just busier than I would have preferred), which made the house feel less remote. Regardless, we would have no reservations about staying here the next time we visit the Adirondacks! Thanks Maura & David for sharing your lovely home with us!
My husband and I rent in the Adirondacks every year, this is by far our favorite home and view! House is immaculate and very charming, lots of little extra household amenities that we much appreciated. But what had us at Hello was the View the View the View! Just stunning. The master bedroom, kitchen and front yard all have sweeping views of Lake Algonquin and the mountains on the other side.....like in a picture book. Loved biking down Griffin Road to the river and going for a dip, had a nice hike up Hadley mountain - another really amazing view from there. Kayaking the lake was fun, and lots of reading done in those adirondack chairs. When weather permitted, meals enjoyed on the picnic table overlooking the lake. We hope to visit this winter as we understand there is great snowshoeing and x country skiing in this area.
What a fantastic home away from home! David and Maura's farmhouse exceeded my expectations on all levels. I would say that I'm particular and attentive to detail, and never expected to find a rental as nice as this one. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed my time and recommend this to anyone. I could go on and on...
My husband and I spent a long weekend at this stunning house with some friends. We did a lot of snow shoeing across the lake and through the woods and ran into some wild turkeys and deer...FUN! There were car races on the lake and we were able to watch them while drinking our coffee in the kitchen. The views were breathtaking and we couldn't have asked for better accommodations! The owner was a pleasure to work with and we are already making plans to come back this summer.
