About the Southern Adirondacks
The Adirondack Park is the largest park in the United States, larger than Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon combined, encompassing 6 million acres. With 3000 lakes and ponds and thousands of miles of paths, the Adirondack trails and waterways are vast, wild and primal-perfect for hiking, canoeing, snowmobiling and skiing.
Most have heard of Lake Placid, the High Peaks and Lake George, which are in the middle of the ADK park. We are located 2 hours south of Lake Placid, a 4 hour drive from NYC, close enough for a convenient weekend getaway. This southern area is a virtually untapped resource of natural beauty and dramatic wilderness, without the crowds. Rt 30 is one of the recommended Top Picks for drives through the Adirondacks, so head north or south from any one of our homes to explore great vistas and nearby lakes and towns.
Spending time on Lake Algonquin in Wells is like taking a step back in time. It's a picturesque, quiet lake surrounded by mountains. You may be the only ones on the lake, even on a weekend in summer, it's that quiet. There is one fabulous coffee shop, a deli, free tennis courts and a diner. Great local hikes to waterfalls nearby. We share all the local scoop with you.
Charley Lake in Wells is a mountain top spring fed lake, loons live on this very peaceful and quiet lake. Great spot for a bit of a respite from civilization, especially in winter as ours is the only house open in winter!
Lake Pleasant is also very peaceful, but has access to a bit more action in nearby Speculator. Great restaurants, free tennis, golf, horseback riding, motorboat and snowmobile rentals and adorable Oak Mountain for skiing and sledding in winter. Looking for a romantic, authentic adirondack log cabin experience? Try our Lake Pleasant Log Cabin.
Piseco Lake is a kayakers haven. There are outlets at either end of the lake for exploring shorelines and wildlife viewing, our Camp Starlite is on the southern outlet, a short kayak from exploring either Piseco Lake or Big Bay Lake. The boathouse is filled with kayaks and a canoe so guests can join in the fun. The hike up Panther Mt to Echo Cliff is a favorite - and is also the picture on the home page of this website, taken by a guest staying at Camp Starlite!
Winter in the Adirondacks can be magical. Families love skiing and sledding at adorable, family friendly and affordable Oak Mt.
